MAKEUPARTIST 101: 5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW- PART 1

Hello guys!!
Just pretend I am not here...seeing as no matter the quantity of cow head I bring as sacrifice will appease you guys...so just pretend that I am not the one writing....

Soooooo the post I have been postponing and postponing is finally up!!
5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW AS A YOUNG MAKEUP ARTIST...
you see there are times I look back ( I am still a young makeup artist though) and I say "I wish someone had told me that!"  This business is not as easy as it looks like, carving a niche for yourself, getting the clients, dealing with clients (TRUST ME THIS ONE IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST CHALLENGES!! bridesmaids we see you..lol), funding and so on..it could  prove really difficult and tasking and then eventually, discouraging!! So I thought about this post and I thought to myself It would be a nice idea to gather some colleagues to talk about this.

I will be saying my own in the PART 2 as I have a lot to say..lol!

Anyways, I am GRATEFUL to the amazing and humble makeup artists I contacted that obliged me ( see I received some ELA OJUKAN, but hey!! it is what it is!! lmao)

Osamu of BeautyMatterz accepted me with warm arms, even though I don't quite have a personal relationship with her!

Chika of LCC was even more excited than I was..lol she is such a sweet person!!

Dolapo of Bellezza Faces I trusted with this, because we had done earlier collabos, and she came through chap chap! GIRL! I can't thank you enough!

Then Yemisi of NSURE beauty, even with her new THISDAY cover page feature with other great artists as herself, told me " I am honoured you asked me" IMAGINE! lol such "humbleness!" you owe me one brush set to celebrate your new and well deserved status o!! ehen!

thank you guys so much! y''all inspire me!!

Anyways, ON TO THE MATTER...listen to what they have to say, get your notepads ready, don't let me hear you say you forgot your biro at home, abi your eleganza is not working!!! OK!!  CLASS UP STAND! GREEET!!!......

"I started out as a self taught makeup artist and one of the key things I knew was important is research: which helps to you get better.

Keeping records; financial and client records

 Client relations

Networking; while starting I was always more of a loner and I never opened up to other makeup artists (in some ways I'm still that). Looking back, I realize that some people I met would have been great mentors.

Mentoring; although I did contact a couple of 'senior' makeup artists--some responses just scared me right away and that made me think there was no way I could have a makeup artist as a mentor; I wish I had contacted some more people and get my silver lining.

Product Knowledge: not like I didn't work with great brands but I wish I has experimented a bit more!!!"

A GOOD FACE PRIMER IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Being a self taught MUA, I had no choice but to learn on the Job. I bought several primers but wasn’t quite sure which was good. This made blending my foundation  a task and it took me time to realize that apart from reducing shine, a good primer just makes your foundation glide and blend in easily.

DON’T TAKE MORE THAT YOU CAN HANDLE.
One of my early jobs was getting makeup done on eight bridesmaids. Happy about the cool cash (as an Ibo girl) and clueless about time management, I believed that I could handle everything. I appeared on the day with no assistants. Till date, I don’t know how I survived that day but it was hectic and really overwhelming. However, I learned a vital lesson which is, you can’t do it all, especially when you have time constraints; so feel free to get helping hands.

ALWAYS HAVE EXTRAS OF YOUR BITS AND PIECES
No matter how careful you are, you should keep extra brow pencils, eye liners, mascaras and smaller products you can lose easily. This would save you a lot of time on days where you just can’t find that particular item in your makeup kit. It also helps to keep extra powder brushes for extra clients on a busy day.

GET A GOOD CAMERA
These days, makeup artists are fast becoming photographers themselves. This is because no matter how good you are, you can’t showcase your skills if you don’t document your work. Often times, a phone doesn't do justice to your pictures, so get a decent camera to build your portfolio. Pictures also help keep track of your growth, and you can use them to see your areas of improvement.

WATCH AND LEARN
As makeup artists, we can learn a few tricks from one another so never feel like you know it all. I used to be shy to ask questions but now I’m better. It’s okay to watch others work if you’re not doing anything. I still learn from online tutorials and I get tips from my colleagues till date. You can only get better if you watch and learn

I wish I knew that makeup is not just about investing in high-end brands, some not so pricey brands can give you great results too. Makeup artistry is a combination of great technique and effective products.

I wish I knew that makeup should be tailor made to suit occasion and the personality of your client. Its not just about using the same 'formula' on everyone that happens to sit on your makeup stool.

I wish I knew how important time management is especially for wedding makeovers and photoshoots. For instance,a hair stylist showing up late or not being on schedule on the wedding morning can affect the amount of time the makeup artist has to work with. You would always get better results when you are not pressed for time.

I wish I knew how to draw the line between friendships and business relationships early enough. If you have to give EVERYONE a discount based on who referred them or how long you have known them, business would grow a lot more slowly.

I wish I knew early enough, the role passion plays in any business,it is what will make you to commit to getting better at what you do, no matter how long it takes
